With the 2020 legislative session beginning this week, we need your help to make a positive difference in the lives of older people in our community. Pima Council on Aging is working hard to meet the needs of a growing aging population, but our funding is stagnant and hasn't come back up to pre-recession levels, when it was cut by 67%.
For the past 3 years, the Area Agencies on Aging in Arizona, like PCOA, have not received any funding to make up for the rising minimum wage. The providers for other systems, like the Arizona Long-Term Care System, did. We use many of the same providers but are challenged to be able to actually get workers into the homes of our clients when other systems are able to offer more service hours or higher payments.
In order for PCOA to provide the critical supportive services to the increased number of people on our waiting list, we have joined with other Arizona Area Agencies on Aging to ask for an increase of $2.5 million. This critical funding will allow us to ensure that older adults with proven needs will get the in-home support they need to allow them to stay in their homes. Without it, our waiting lists will continue to grow and needless delays in people getting the help we know they need will increase.
