![]() AMN Healthcare Selected to Play Critical Role in National Vaccination Effort
AMN Healthcare, the nation's largest healthcare staffing company, has been selected by the Federal Emergency Management Agency to deploy healthcare professionals to Community Vaccination Centers in every state east of the Mississippi River plus the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. This historic effort will significantly expand COVID-19 vaccination availability and equity to communities, with a particular focus on underserved and hard-to-reach populations.
AMN will be recruiting and providing staff for these centers to relieve federal agency personnel that have been working on vaccination efforts and now need to return to their permanent jobs supporting responses to natural disasters and other critical public health and safety needs.
The company was chosen by FEMA because of its expertise in quickly developing and executing large-scale healthcare projects. This includes a track record of deploying and managing comprehensive healthcare programs during the pandemic, including managing other large-scale vaccination programs, organizing COVID-19 field hospitals, testing, and contract tracing programs, and establishing return-to-work programs for industries, organizations, and schools.
![]() NorthShore University Health System Physician Leading Initiative on Equity in Maternal Health
A statewide initiative in Illinois is seeking to address racial disparities in maternal and child health outcomes, focusing on social determinants of health that can affect maternal health. The Birth Equity Initiative is an initiative of the Illinois Perinatal Quality Collaborative, led by Dr. Ann Borders, a maternal fetal medicine physician at NorthShore University Health System.
The Birth Equity Initiative is promoting the screening of patients during prenatal visits and during delivery admission for non-medical barriers to care. Dr. Borders told the Illinois Newsroom that there are "issues that may be impacting women's health outcomes, but not what we typically think of measuring when you come to the doctor's office." She said identifying a patient's challenges with food insecurity, housing, transportation or child care can enable hospital staff to connect patients with resources.
Dr. Borders said the initiative will also be reviewing maternal health quality data by race, ethnicity, and insurance status to identify disparities and opportunities for improvement. Other activities include standardizing patient safety education for new mothers before they're sent home and providing hospital staff with racial bias training and education.
