| Merck, Gates Institute Announce Licensing Agree for Novel TB Antibiotic Candidates
Merck, a Healthcare Leadership Council member, and the Bill & Melinda Gates Medical Research Institute have announced a licensing agreement for two preclinical antibacterial candidates to be evaluated as potential components of combination regimens to treat tuberculosis. The antibacterial candidates were discovered by Merck scientists as part of the TB Drug Accelerator, a collaboration among biopharmaceutical companies, research organizations and universities to accelerate the discovery and development of novel therapeutic candidates against TB.
Dr. Dean Y. Li, president of Merck Research Laboratories, said, "At Merck, we have a proud legacy of addressing some of the world's most challenging infectious diseases. With the expertise and capabilities of the Gates Medical Research Institute, MK-7762 and MK-3854 (the two antibacterial candidates) are positioned for rigorous evaluation of their potential as components of novel TB treatment regimens." Tuberculosis is a major global cause of illness and disability, and is one of the leading causes of death from an infectious disease worldwide, responsible for an estimated 1.5 million deaths per year. |
Fairview Health Services Launches Program for Younger Women with Breast Cancer
More than 26,000 women under the age of 45 are diagnosed with breast cancer every year. Thanks to advances in treatment, many are living for years, even decades, after their diagnosis while managing their symptoms. Minnesota's Fairview Health Services, a Healthcare Leadership Council member, is partnering with the nonprofit organization Living Beyond Breast Cancer to provide survivorship care and resources for these women.
The program involves resources designed to supplement the support younger women living with breast cancer already receive during medical visits. Topics include nutrition, sex and intimacy, symptom management, mental health, and more. The program provides support for both women whose cancer is in remission and those living with metastatic cancer.
Dr. Anne Blaes, a hematologist/oncologist with M Health Fairview said, "We continue to evolve our survivorship programming to address the needs of people undergoing active treatment as well as those who are no longer on therapy. There's growing recognition of the fact that many women are living beyond but also with breast cancer. One of the great ways that Living Beyond Breast Cancer supports our care is by providing additional resources on psychosocial needs. It tackles everything from job-related stress to the stress of living with a metastatic diagnosis. How do you keep being a parent and supporting yourself at the same time you're going through treatment?"
