Mayo Clinic Uses Artificial Intelligence to Better Monitor Patients for Heart Failure
Recognizing the need for increased monitoring of patients at risk for heart failure, Mayo Clinic researchers created an artificial intelligence-based method to monitor patients more closely and strengthen the diagnosis process. Covered in Nature Medicine, this innovation can be used to assess electrocardiogram recordings (ECG) to detect heart failure outside of a clinical setting. Mayo Clinic is a member of the Healthcare Leadership Council.
To test the AI-based diagnosis method, researchers gathered over 2,400 study participants - Mayo Clinic patients - from the United States and 11 other countries. They downloaded an application that enabled them to upload their Apple Watch electrocardiogram recording to their electronic health records. This AI method showed that some of the patients had a low ejection fraction, indicating a weak heart pump. Traditional electrocardiograms confirmed these findings.
Dr. Paul Friedman, chair of Mayo's Department of Cardiovascular Medicine said, "Currently, we diagnose ventricular dysfunction - a weak heart pump - through an electrocardiogram, CT scan, or an MRI, but these are expensive, time consuming, and at times inaccessible. The ability to diagnose a weak heart pump remotely, from an ECG that a person records using a consumer device, such as a smartwatch, allows a timely identification of this potentially life-threatening disease at massive scale."

Amazon Clinic Will Provide Virtual Care in 32 States
Amazon has introduced Amazon Clinic, a message-based virtual care service that connects customers with affordable virtual care options when and how they need it - at home, after dinner, at the grocery store, or on the go - for more than 20 common health conditions, such as allergies, acne and hair loss. Amazon Health Services is a member of the Healthcare Leadership Council.
Amazon Clinic will initially be available in 32 states. To get started, customers will select their condition, then choose their preferred provider from a list of licensed and qualified telehealth provider. Next, they will complete a short intake questionnaire. Customers and clinicians then directly connect through a secure message-based portal, giving customers the flexibility to message their clinician when it is most convenient for them. After the message-based consultation, the clinician will send a personalized treatment plan via the portal, including any necessary prescriptions to the customer's preferred pharmacy.
In a statement, Amazon said, "We believe that improving both the occasional and ongoing engagement experience is necessary to making care dramatically better. We also believe that customers should have the agency to choose what works best for them. Amazon Clinic is just one of the ways we're working to empower people to take control of their health by providing access to convenient, affordable care in partnership with trusted providers." |
